Review

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Moments of Genesis are as spooky and arty as those on Abacab — in particular, there’s the tortured howl of “Mama,” uncannily reminiscent of Phil Collins’ Face Value, and the two-part “Second Home by the Sea” — but this eponymous 1983 album is indeed a rebirth, as so many self-titled albums delivered in the thick of a band’s career often are. Here the art rock functions as coloring to the pop songs, unlike on Abacab and Duke, where the reverse is true. Some of this may be covering their bets — to ensure that the longtime fans didn’t jump ship, they gave them a bit of art — some of it may be that the band just couldn’t leave prog behind, but the end result is the same: as of this record, Genesis was now primarily a pop band. Anybody who paid attention to “Misunderstanding” and “No Reply at All” could tell that this was a good pop band, primarily thanks to the rapidly escalating confidence of Phil Collins, but Genesis illustrates just how good they could be, by balancing such sleek, pulsating pop tunes as “That’s All” with a newfound touch for aching ballads, as on “Taking It All Too Hard.” They still rocked — “Just a Job to Do” has an almost nasty edge to its propulsion — and they could still get too silly as on “Illegal Alien,” where Phil’s Speedy Gonzalez accident is an outright embarrassment (although in some ways it’s not all that far removed from his Artful Dodger accent on the previous album’s “Who Dunnit?”), and that’s why the album doesn’t quite gel. It has a little bit too much of everything — too much pop, too much art, too much silliness — so it doesn’t pull together, but if taken individually, most of these moments are very strong, testaments to the increasing confidence and pop power of the trio, even if it’s not quite what longtime fans might care to hear. allmusicguide

Biography (Shankar)

by John Bush

Shankar, a violinist, singer and composer, teaches Indian Classical styles by incorporating them into Western musics. He has worked with many Western musicians, including Peter Gabriel, Yoko Ono, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins, Talking Heads, and Lou Reed. He first began vocal lessons at the age of two, violin lessons at five, and drumming lessons at seven. After receiving a doctorate in ethnomusicology, he co-formed (with British composer Caroline) a pop/rock group in 1982, the Epidemics. The band has released three albums: The Epidemics, Do What You Do and Eye Catcher.

The two also work in an Indian quartet with Shankar’s father, V. Lakshminarayana, and his sister, Gana Rao. The group’s four albums are Panca Nadai Pallavi, Galaxy, Nobody Told Me and Soul Searcher.

Shankar also co-founded Shakti with John McLaughlin; the two released Shakti, Handful of Beauty and Natural Elements. His two solo albums are Touch Me There (produced by Frank Zappa) and Who’s to Know. allmusichuide

In 1982 Shankar formed the pop/rock group Sadhu, later known as the Epidemics, with British composer, vocalist and keyboardist Caroline. Their two albums included a wide array of pop stars as guests: Frank Zappa, Peter Gabriel, John McLaughlin, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Yoko Ono and Sting among others. worldmusiccentral

Review

by Johnny Loftus

Stephanie Kirkham’s debut is a collection of nicely appointed folk-pop tunes, her whispery lilt and acoustic strum accompanied nicely by subtle electronic programming. The single “Inappropriate” fortifies that formula, weaving Kirkham’s charmingly accented flutter and the layers of backup harmonies around a piano hook break and rambling electric guitar. The result is catchy and polite, quite suggestive of the Corrs’ 2000 hit, “Breathless.” In fact, most of That Girl is catchy and polite, exceedingly so. The title cut tracks the Sundays through light electronics; Kirkham’s lyrics tell the usual modernist story of a strong-willed yet fussily romantic girl stuck in a relationship with a cute mechanic. Please open your diaries to page 36. Elsewhere, the delicate “When You Were Here” and “Never in a Million Years” threaten with each plink of synthesizer or codependent lyric to drift away, while the brooding “Blank White Sheet” seems to have wandered in from a Loreena McKennitt album. It’s in this way that That Girl is pretty, but also pretty referential. From “Monday Morning”‘s “Maybe his eyes will meet mine/You never know when your life might change” to “Your problems are not my problems anymore/After this I’ll change my number for sure” (from the Dido-ish electronic putter of “Somebody Else’s Girl”), That Girl turns back and forth between hoping for happiness and wishing it never came. It’s OK that Kirkham doesn’t have the answers. But her tools for asking the questions could use some sharpening. Still, she has an attractive if thin voice, and her music should be warm, shimmering, and inviting for fans of the genre. allmusicguide

Review

by Ned Raggett

To the Faithful Departed turned out to be where the Cranberries’ best intentions finally and thoroughly tripped them up. Switching producers to Bruce Fairbairn was a troubling enough move to begin with; Stephen Street’s ear for the band’s dynamics was note-perfect, but Fairbairn’s work with arena-rock monsters like Aerosmith meant that on Departed everything was scaled up accordingly. The results may have been more commercial, but they took the identity of the band with it — the opening song “Hollywood” was a sludgefest that, ironically, didn’t give the band the muscular kick that propelled songs like “Zombie.” O’Riordan, meanwhile, decided she was a generation’s spokesperson, fully taking over the songwriting, except on a couple of cuts with Noel Hogan, penning some appropriate liner notes, and running with it. Songtitles say it all — “War Child,” “I Just Shot John Lennon,” complete with cheesy gun shots, and perhaps most painfully obvious at the end, “Bosnia.” Then there’s lead single “Salvation,” which preaches against heroin addiction in a manner worthy of afterschool specials and with about as much depth. Not that good songs can’t and haven’t been written on these subjects, of course, but O’Riordan, lacking a truly individual or unique take on them, is not the person to be writing them. Or singing them — her wails and yelps now run rampant, being less voice-as-instrument as it is signature calling card to be employed throughout. There are bright points — every so often Hogan’s guitar comes through at its best, and there’s the retro-’50s finger-snapping “When You’re Gone” and the nicely arranged “Electric Blue.” Still, when compared to No Need and especially Everybody, Departed completely suffers in comparison. allmusic

Many people’s perception of the Proms is taken from the Last Night, although this concert is very different from the others. It usually takes place on the second Saturday in September, and is broadcast in the UK on BBC2 (first half) and BBC1 (second half). The concert is traditionally in a lighter, ‘winding-down’ vein, with popular classics being followed by a series of British patriotic pieces in the second half of the concert. This sequence traditionally begins with Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 (Land of Hope and Glory), and continues with Sir Henry Wood’s Fantasia on British Sea Songs, which culminates in Thomas Arne’s Rule, Britannia!. However, the Fantasia has not featured since 2007, though Rule, Britannia! has retained its place in the programme in its own right. The concert concludes with Hubert Parry’s Jerusalem (a setting of a poem by William Blake), and the British national anthem. The repeat of the Elgar march at the Last Night can be traced to the spontaneous audience demand for an encore at its premiere at the 1901 Proms.[39] The closing sequence of the second half became fully established in 1954 during Sargent’s tenure as chief conductor of The Proms.[40] The Prommers have made a tradition of singing Auld Lang Syne after the end of the concert, but it is not in the programme. However, when James Loughran, a Scot, conducted at the Last Night in the 1970s he did include the piece in the programme.

Tickets are highly sought after. Promming tickets are the same price as for other concerts during the season, but tickets for seats are more expensive. To buy a seat in advance, it is necessary to have bought tickets for at least five other Proms in the season to have a chance of getting a Last Night ticket, and either an advance booking must include those five concerts, plus an application for a Last Night ticket, or the ticket stubs must be presented at the box office when purchasing a Last Night ticket for that season; tickets can only be purchased in an equivalent (or lower) price band to that for the previous tickets. Once the advance booking period ends, there is no requirement to have booked for additional concerts, but the concert is generally sold out by this time, though returns may be available. For standing places, full season tickets automatically include last night admission, half-season ticket holders have access to a special distribution of tickets, but must purchase their Last Night ticket in addition to the cost of the season ticket; day Prommers also have to present five ticket stubs at the box office. Some standing tickets are sold on the day, just as for other concerts during the season.[41] In the post-War period, with the growing popularity of the “Last Night”, the only way to obtain tickets was through a postal ballot system where prospective buyers submitted an application well in advance, along with a stamped and addressed reply envelope. The lucky ones received their tickets by return. A ballot remains for the chance to win 1 of 100 stalls seats.[41] Prior to 2009, the requirement was for six concerts in addition to the Last Night when purchasing a ticket in advance. wikipedia

Dreamlab is an album by the German band Mythos. It was released in 1975 on the Kosmische Musik label and featured a new line-up of the band.

Similar to the works of several other fellow artists on the same label, the album develops a science fiction concept around the story of an extraterrestrial visitor on a journey to Earth. Dreamlab is predominantly made up of peaceful and relaxed music. The metre is often determined by echoes from flutes and guitar riffs backed by expansive Mellotron arrangements. The song “Expeditions” was used as the soundtrack for the film Die Superspinne. wikipedia

Review

by Klaus Kehrle

Fortunately, this is not one of these Kosmische Kuriere albums that made the cosmic (kosmischen) to the odd (komischen) couriers in the German music press. Like other LPs of the label, it has a science-fiction concept, telling of an interplanetary visitor on a mission to earth. Maybe a little naïve and dreamy today, but different from some labelmates. The musicians are competent and there are perceptible song structures. Dreamlab contains floating, mainly calm and relaxed music. A part of the album was used for the film The Superspider. Often echoes of guitar and flute define the meter and are accompanied by Mellotron sounds. Like on the first LP, effects on voice and drums are frequently used.

As their previous effort, “Mandalas” is a very difficult but passionate listening, only built on synthesis harmonies, following almost absent, invisible melodic lines and making a large part to micro silence and sound environnement. “Kundalini” is a fine exemple of cloudy experimental improvisations dominated by strange musical inflexions written for acoustic instruments (flute, piano, cello…) , the movement between the instruments is inexact, often syncopated, giving a paranoiac dimension to the ensemble (the unclear “Heiku” with its embedded virtual lines). “Dhyana” is an other singular instrumental, featuring long monotonous organic chords with strange, enigmatic wind instruments and droning voices…an allusion to a “trip” , producing hallucinatory effects on the consciousness. Silence / Time / Eternity are the real musical dimensions of this “cosmic” music. Not really beautiful but it reveals quite evocative states of mind. Recommended for those who like the most radical, agitated parts of krautrock experimentations (Zweistein, Anima…) progarchives

Review

by Scott Yanow

This spirited fusion date was previously released in Japan in 1992 but had to wait 13 years to make its American debut. Guitarist Jimi Tunnell is the main star, displaying plenty of fire on guitar, mixing together the sound of rock with the sophisticated improvising of jazz. He works closely with his rhythm section and there are spots for saxophonist Bendik Hofseth and keyboardist Rachel Z, too. Considering the power and virtuosity that is displayed on Trilateral Commission, it is surprising that it took this long for the set to become available stateside. Jimi Tunnell deserves to be much better known in the American fusion world.
