Biography (Shankar)

by John Bush

Shankar, a violinist, singer and composer, teaches Indian Classical styles by incorporating them into Western musics. He has worked with many Western musicians, including Peter Gabriel, Yoko Ono, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins, Talking Heads, and Lou Reed. He first began vocal lessons at the age of two, violin lessons at five, and drumming lessons at seven. After receiving a doctorate in ethnomusicology, he co-formed (with British composer Caroline) a pop/rock group in 1982, the Epidemics. The band has released three albums: The Epidemics, Do What You Do and Eye Catcher.

The two also work in an Indian quartet with Shankar’s father, V. Lakshminarayana, and his sister, Gana Rao. The group’s four albums are Panca Nadai Pallavi, Galaxy, Nobody Told Me and Soul Searcher.

Shankar also co-founded Shakti with John McLaughlin; the two released Shakti, Handful of Beauty and Natural Elements. His two solo albums are Touch Me There (produced by Frank Zappa) and Who’s to Know. allmusichuide

In 1982 Shankar formed the pop/rock group Sadhu, later known as the Epidemics, with British composer, vocalist and keyboardist Caroline. Their two albums included a wide array of pop stars as guests: Frank Zappa, Peter Gabriel, John McLaughlin, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Yoko Ono and Sting among others. worldmusiccentral

Review

by Ned Raggett

To the Faithful Departed turned out to be where the Cranberries’ best intentions finally and thoroughly tripped them up. Switching producers to Bruce Fairbairn was a troubling enough move to begin with; Stephen Street’s ear for the band’s dynamics was note-perfect, but Fairbairn’s work with arena-rock monsters like Aerosmith meant that on Departed everything was scaled up accordingly. The results may have been more commercial, but they took the identity of the band with it — the opening song “Hollywood” was a sludgefest that, ironically, didn’t give the band the muscular kick that propelled songs like “Zombie.” O’Riordan, meanwhile, decided she was a generation’s spokesperson, fully taking over the songwriting, except on a couple of cuts with Noel Hogan, penning some appropriate liner notes, and running with it. Songtitles say it all — “War Child,” “I Just Shot John Lennon,” complete with cheesy gun shots, and perhaps most painfully obvious at the end, “Bosnia.” Then there’s lead single “Salvation,” which preaches against heroin addiction in a manner worthy of afterschool specials and with about as much depth. Not that good songs can’t and haven’t been written on these subjects, of course, but O’Riordan, lacking a truly individual or unique take on them, is not the person to be writing them. Or singing them — her wails and yelps now run rampant, being less voice-as-instrument as it is signature calling card to be employed throughout. There are bright points — every so often Hogan’s guitar comes through at its best, and there’s the retro-’50s finger-snapping “When You’re Gone” and the nicely arranged “Electric Blue.” Still, when compared to No Need and especially Everybody, Departed completely suffers in comparison. allmusic

Review

by Scott Yanow

This spirited fusion date was previously released in Japan in 1992 but had to wait 13 years to make its American debut. Guitarist Jimi Tunnell is the main star, displaying plenty of fire on guitar, mixing together the sound of rock with the sophisticated improvising of jazz. He works closely with his rhythm section and there are spots for saxophonist Bendik Hofseth and keyboardist Rachel Z, too. Considering the power and virtuosity that is displayed on Trilateral Commission, it is surprising that it took this long for the set to become available stateside. Jimi Tunnell deserves to be much better known in the American fusion world.

Review

by Jose F. Promis

After scoring no less than four American Top 10 hits from her debut album, Move to This, British singer Cathy Dennis followed up with a fine second album, Into the Skyline, which unfortunately fell into the dreaded “sophomore slump” category, perhaps because it treaded similar musical waters as her debut. As a result, her third and best album never saw a release in the United States. Am I the Kinda Girl was released during the peak of the 1990s grunge era, resulting in an album much more earthy and melancholy than her two previous dance-oriented records. This album, in fact, could very well be classified as a rock/pop album with no real dance cuts. “Am I the kinda girl that could be your boyfriend?” is the question she asks on the album’s title track, and that sets the lyrical tone for the album. The lyrics are ripe with drug references and sexual innuendoes (without resorting to foul language), yet the songs possess a definite feeling of sadness. The ballads resonate with a 1960s sound, and the results are beautiful. “When Dreams Turn to Dust,” “Stupid Fool.” and “The Date” are among the album’s best songs, and they are sung so earnestly they almost sound tearful. She also provides a great cover of the Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset.” The upbeat songs, namely “Homing the Rocket” and “That Is Why You Love Me” are no less engaging. This is a solid, sincerely delivered album that unfortunately never received the exposure it was due.

Biography

by Scott Yanow

George Wallington was one of the first and best bop pianists, ranking up there with Al Haig, just below Bud Powell. He was also the composer of two bop standards that caught on for a time: “Lemon Drop” and “Godchild.” Born in Sicily, Wallington and his family moved to the U.S. in 1925. He arrived in New York in the early ’40s and was a member of the first bop group to play on 52nd Street, Dizzy Gillespie’s combo of 1943-1944. After spending a year with Joe Marsala’s band, Wallington played with the who’s who of bop during 1946-1952, including Charlie Parker, Serge Chaloff, Allan Eager, Kai Winding, Terry Gibbs, Brew Moore, Al Cohn, Gerry Mulligan, Zoot Sims, and Red Rodney. He toured Europe with Lionel Hampton’s ill-fated big band of 1953, and during 1954-1960 he led groups in New York that included among its up-and-coming sidemen Donald Byrd and Jackie McLean (the latter succeeded by Phil Woods). Then, in 1960, Wallington gave up on the music business altogether and retired to work in his family’s air-conditioning company. 24 years later he re-emerged, recording three albums of original material before time ran out.

Review

by Scott Yanow

After 24 years off the scene, pianist George Wallington surprised many who had forgotten by him by recording this solo CD, the first of three. Although all ten of the selections are Wallington originals, his boppish style was largely unchanged from the 1950s, and some of the tunes are based on the chord changes of more common standards. However, the melodies are fresh, Wallington’s improvisations are full of joyful swing, and the overall results (available as a Japanese import through Denon) are quite appealing.
