Biography (Shankar)

by John Bush

Shankar, a violinist, singer and composer, teaches Indian Classical styles by incorporating them into Western musics. He has worked with many Western musicians, including Peter Gabriel, Yoko Ono, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins, Talking Heads, and Lou Reed. He first began vocal lessons at the age of two, violin lessons at five, and drumming lessons at seven. After receiving a doctorate in ethnomusicology, he co-formed (with British composer Caroline) a pop/rock group in 1982, the Epidemics. The band has released three albums: The Epidemics, Do What You Do and Eye Catcher.

The two also work in an Indian quartet with Shankar’s father, V. Lakshminarayana, and his sister, Gana Rao. The group’s four albums are Panca Nadai Pallavi, Galaxy, Nobody Told Me and Soul Searcher.

Shankar also co-founded Shakti with John McLaughlin; the two released Shakti, Handful of Beauty and Natural Elements. His two solo albums are Touch Me There (produced by Frank Zappa) and Who’s to Know. allmusichuide

In 1982 Shankar formed the pop/rock group Sadhu, later known as the Epidemics, with British composer, vocalist and keyboardist Caroline. Their two albums included a wide array of pop stars as guests: Frank Zappa, Peter Gabriel, John McLaughlin, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Yoko Ono and Sting among others. worldmusiccentral

Review

by Johnny Loftus

Stephanie Kirkham’s debut is a collection of nicely appointed folk-pop tunes, her whispery lilt and acoustic strum accompanied nicely by subtle electronic programming. The single “Inappropriate” fortifies that formula, weaving Kirkham’s charmingly accented flutter and the layers of backup harmonies around a piano hook break and rambling electric guitar. The result is catchy and polite, quite suggestive of the Corrs’ 2000 hit, “Breathless.” In fact, most of That Girl is catchy and polite, exceedingly so. The title cut tracks the Sundays through light electronics; Kirkham’s lyrics tell the usual modernist story of a strong-willed yet fussily romantic girl stuck in a relationship with a cute mechanic. Please open your diaries to page 36. Elsewhere, the delicate “When You Were Here” and “Never in a Million Years” threaten with each plink of synthesizer or codependent lyric to drift away, while the brooding “Blank White Sheet” seems to have wandered in from a Loreena McKennitt album. It’s in this way that That Girl is pretty, but also pretty referential. From “Monday Morning”‘s “Maybe his eyes will meet mine/You never know when your life might change” to “Your problems are not my problems anymore/After this I’ll change my number for sure” (from the Dido-ish electronic putter of “Somebody Else’s Girl”), That Girl turns back and forth between hoping for happiness and wishing it never came. It’s OK that Kirkham doesn’t have the answers. But her tools for asking the questions could use some sharpening. Still, she has an attractive if thin voice, and her music should be warm, shimmering, and inviting for fans of the genre. allmusicguide

In African music, the mbira (also known as Likembe, Mbila, Thumb piano, Mbira Huru, Mbira Njari, Mbira Nyunga Nyunga, Karimbao or Kalimba) is a musical instrument that consists of a wooden board to which staggered metal keys have been attached. It is often fitted into a resonator. In Eastern and Southern Africa there are many kinds of mbira, usually accompanied by the hosho. Among the Shona people there are three that are very popular (see Shona music). The Mbira is usually classified as part of the lamellaphone family. It is also part of the idiophones family of musical instruments. In some places it is also known as a sanza or sansa.

In the late 1960s to early 70s sanza was the generic term used to describe these members of the lamellophone family. Mbira has now become so well known due to the worldwide stage performance and recordings of Thomas Mapfumo whose music is based on and includes the mbira, and the work of Dumisani Maraire who brought marimba and karimba music to the US Pacific Northwest, Ephat Mujuru who was one of the pioneer teachers of mbira in the US, and the writings and recordings of Zimbabwean musicians made by Paul Berliner. Mbira has now replaced sanza as the generic term. Dr. Joseph H. Howard, owner of the largest collection of drums and ancillary folk instruments in the Americas, often stated it is “the instrument most typical of Africa.” By this he meant that the instruments were only found in areas populated by Africans or their descendants. Babatunde Olatunji made a similar statement in his book “Musical Instruments of Africa.” He states the mbira “a finger xylophone, is native to Africa and is common throughout the continent. It is known nowhere else except in parts of the Americas where it was taken by Africans.” wikipedia

Review

by Tom Demalon

Geldof returns after a four-year absence with his second solo release, The Vegetarians of Love. Again, there are some high-profile guests including Paul Carrack, Kevin Godley, and Dave Stewart, but this Rupert Hine-produced affair has a low-key feel to it. Geldof applies his Dylanesque croak to a set that is very heavy on Irish-folk influences with rich results.

“A Gospel Song” is a gorgeous, organ-driven track that leads things off. Dave Stewart lends his guitar work to the catchy pop/rock of “Love Or Something.” “The Great Song of Indifference,” is a wry, tongue-in-cheek stomp fueled by pennywhistles, accordion and violin. There’s even the appearance of former Boomtown Rat bandmate Pete Briquette playing bass and keyboards and co-writing the pleasant, albeit meandering, “Thinking Voyager 2 Type Things.” A commercial flop on both sides of the Atlantic, this album is, nonetheless, a joyous romp from start to finish.

“Haiti Cherie” is a traditional patriotic song of Haiti. Written and composed by Dr. Othello Bayard de Cayes and initially called “Souvenir d’Haiti,” it represents the pride Haitian people feel for their country and culture. Within the Haitian community, at home and abroad, it is widely considered as a second national anthem.

Ti Corn, a Haitian of German descent, recorded “Haiti Cherie” in the 1960s. wikipedia

Brilliantly capturing the essence of this true legend at this live gig recorded almost twenty years ago at the end of a 30 date european tour, they were fired up and ready for it. the band formed some 25 years before that to bring the new tango of Argentina to a wider audience as Astor says, it was viewed as ‘crazy music’ which people had difficulty understanding (& still did when this was recorded originally) as with so many artists worldwide who are adventurous, those in Argentina who only recognised traditional tango veiwed him as a traitor. sad isn’t it that we can’t just enjoy music and are not more open to listen with open ears, there’s far too much good music out there to miss out on with that blinkered view, their loss. Brilliant. Graham Radley@worldmusic.co.uk

Ástor Pantaleón Piazzolla (March 11, 1921 – July 4, 1992) was an Argentine tango composer and bandoneón player. His oeuvre revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. A virtuoso bandoneónist, he regularly performed his own compositions with different ensembles. wikipedia

Biography

by Steve Huey

It’s not hyperbole to say that Astor Piazzolla is the single most important figure in the history of tango, a towering giant whose shadow looms large over everything that preceded and followed him. Piazzolla’s place in Argentina’s greatest cultural export is roughly equivalent to that of Duke Ellington in jazz — the genius composer who took an earthy, sensual, even disreputable folk music and elevated it into a sophisticated form of high art. But even more than Ellington, Piazzolla was also a virtuosic performer with a near-unparalleled mastery of his chosen instrument, the bandoneon, a large button accordion noted for its unwieldy size and difficult fingering system. In Piazzolla’s hands, tango was no longer strictly a dance music; his compositions borrowed from jazz and classical forms, creating a whole new harmonic and rhythmic vocabulary made for the concert hall more than the ballroom (which was dubbed “nuevo tango”). Some of his devices could be downright experimental — he wasn’t afraid of dissonance or abrupt shifts in tempo and meter, and he often composed segmented pieces with hugely contrasting moods that interrupted the normal flow and demanded the audience’s concentration. The complexity and ambition of Piazzolla’s oeuvre brought him enormous international acclaim, particularly in Europe and Latin America, but it also earned him the lasting enmity of many tango purists, who attacked him mercilessly for his supposed abandonment of tradition (and even helped drive him out of the country for several years). But Piazzolla always stuck to his guns, and remained tango’s foremost emissary to the world at large up until his death in 1992. allmusic
